Some people might say that the kitchen is the heart of the home. It’s a special place where unforgettable memories are created over breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as on birthdays, holidays, and other special occasions.
A fully-equipped kitchen has several different appliances, including the refrigerator, oven, stove, dishwasher, microwave, as well as tools, including cookware, bakeware, utensils, cups, dinnerware, measuring cups and spoons, the chopping board, and the kettle!
But ultimately, the kitchen would be nothing without the sink. The kitchen sink is essential for washing and preparing ingredients for cooking and for cleaning up at the end of every meal.
Supply lines are integral as they deliver water from a home’s plumbing system to various fixtures. Under the kitchen sink, angle stops control the flow of water from the household plumbing to the supply lines that connect to the kitchen faucet.
Burst Pipe Under Kitchen Sink
A burst in the supply lines or angle stops inside a kitchen may be caused by corrosion or wear and tear from daily or regular use over the years. While this is normal, it is also important to note that the longevity of your fixtures, appliances, and overall plumbing system can be protected by a water pressure regulator.
A pipe may burst due to clogs or pressure, which can lead to internal cracks. Regular maintenance and inspection can help identify clogs, corrosion, or other issues before they lead to bursts.
California Plumbing received a call from a Mission Valley home where the kitchen supply line and angle stop had suddenly burst.
Our technician closed the shut-off valve to stop the water from flowing before inspecting and draining the pipe and angle stops of any remaining water. The shut-off valve remained closed for 2 hours while the supply lines and angle stops were replaced with modern and durable materials. Once the job was done, the water shut-off valve was reopened and the kitchen sink was tested to confirm that there were no leaks.
What To Do When A Pipe Bursts
When a pipe bursts, turn off the water shut-off valve, remain calm, and call a local professional plumber immediately. The shut-off valve for the kitchen sink is usually located right underneath. Document the damage with photos and video along with any necessary information for filing an insurance claim.
A sudden burst pipe can cause damage to the floors, cabinets, and other parts of the home and allow water and moisture to get into appliances and electrical outlets. Weakened floors and walls and growth of mold and mildew are just some of the health and safety hazards that can arise. To minimize the extent of water damage, try to clean and soak up as much water as possible, and open your windows if necessary to air out the moisture.
